EPIPHANY STUDY: Christianity for the Rest of Us by Diane B. Bass - starts January 15th Led by Pastor Phil & Sue Zarek
Epiphany 2017 is a longer season than usual, taking up two full months from January through February before Lent begins on March 1. Beginning January 15 Adult Christian education will be reading and discussing Christianity for the Rest of Us by Diane Bass. Compiled about a decade ago, the book is a collection of reflection, of data and information, and of hands-on examples of neighborhood churches; much like First Lockport who have successfully pursued spiritual renewal and creative and re-energized ministry in their respective spheres. This seems a most appropriate study to parallel our own renewal endeavors in 2017. Pastor Phil will lead a class at 9am on Sunday mornings (FREE doughnuts) and Sue Zarek will lead a class at 7pm on Monday evenings. The book (used) is available online at Amazon (the easiest way to get it) for $4 including shipping. If you are interested in getting a copy let the pastor or church office know by January 5 – we can send in a combined order for 7 books and get free shipping, although it will still be $4. Please note that participating in this study is NOT a commitment to a follow-through group, activity, or ministry. It is a stand-alone study. Trying to nourish a mature Christian faith on a diet of sermons alone is inadequate, even if the sermons are good. A mature, intelligent adult faith requires study and discussion using worthwhile materials in the context of a group of other adults likewise seeking to discern what being a UM Christian means in this early 21st century. Let’s journey together!
