CHRISTMAS EVE MUSIC WILL RESOUND
AT HISTORIC CHURCH
Originally built of rough-hewn stone in the 1850s – and still incorporating those original stones in its education wing – the First Lockport United Methodist Church at 1000 S. Washington, Lockport, will host its annual Christmas Eve service at 10pm on Saturday, December 24. The service will be preceded by a 15 minute mini-concert featuring Diaconal Minister of Music Bonnie Johansen-Werner and Mr. Antonio Gonzalez performing Carols for Tuba and Organ. The service itself will feature a women’s ensemble, and a solo of O Holy Night sung by Taylor Marshall. Music during the worship will include traditional carols such as Joy to the World and O Come All Ye Faithful accompanied by organ, tuba, and soprano descant. A highlight of the evening will be the congregational singing of Silent Night while lit candles are held and passed.
Pastor Philip Sheets explains, “First Lockport is fortunate to have a first-class music staff, with Bonnie Johansen-Werner playing the organ and Donna Kirkwood leading the choir. Bonnie has contributed original music to the United Methodist supplementary hymnal The Faith We Sing; she is on the adjunct faculty of the University of St. Francis and she has her own music students as well. We are proud to spotlight her and the rest of the music program at this year’s service, and we hope that by having worship at 10pm it’s after families have had their own Christmas Eve observances, but not so late as to make everyone go to bed way past midnight!”
